I went with the Johnny Marr live version from 2013 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lIHOZOZYIHs - fantastic performance on Fallon). Kick the trem off for the Chorus, and if you're good with your feet, use the looper for the slide part after the 3rd time past the E/E7 in the verse. Also, Allison Bennett of This Charming Band has a great lesson (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=97aLYKZRsCk) on how to work the multiple parts on the recording into a live performance.

I have heard a lot of 'attempts' at this sound with a tremolo, however, is is not as simple as that. The song was recorded and the 'tremolo' was added afterwards by reamping the guitars and adding the tremolo with a super reverb and a deluxe. The engineer and Johnny, spent all night manually setting the timings on the tremolos and could only managed about 20 seconds each time, before they had to adjust the tremolo and carry on. This created a kind of 'auto-pan' effect. I have tried to get as close as possible with this one. Remember, on the recording the intro was not played with a pick, but softly with a thumb. Enjoy!
